In honor of Valentine’s Day, I wanted to share a poem I place in my favorite poetry jar. I was writing away in the fiction department while Connie was splicing together her lines and phrasing in the poetry department of Bowling Green State University, creating depth out of striking verbal compositions. Not so long ago, but I thank Connie for giving me permission to share The Incubus with you.
The Incubus
by
Connie Vivrett
Born a month early
still blue, too blue
to be what I was supposed to be,
they took me from her
and placed me too soon
to be separated
into the incubator
where I was left to lie
afraid, alone, touched
only on the hour
by rubber handed nurses,
and when finally
three days later
I was released
into the cold air of rebirth
I was placed ever so gently,
bare armed and soft baby legged
in to the tweed arms
of my loving father.
Where were the kisses?
Where was the hairless breast I longed for?
This is how I became
the incubus.
Grown now and still soft skinned
I am a woman
who loves women
blessed with a woman’s body.
And still I long for the woman’s touch.
I am the incubus
who comes to lonely women at night
and loves them.
I leave them
wondering if I was a man or a dream.
They are always afraid
of having dreamt of a woman,
worry that a woman should appear
unnaturally in their sleep.
And so, again, I am never completely touched.
Why do they question themselves?
Could a man touch them
the way I do?
Rough faces have brushed
their nipples and left pain,
clutching, reaching hands
have grabbed beneath their skirts
and hurried on.
I have loved slowly, carefully,
as if a dream,
smooth, red, waxy kisses
left in places they adore.
I am the incubus.
The dream woman no man knows.
The lover no woman believes.
But I exist at night
in young girl’s beds, in old women’s beds
remembered only as a dream
I love them all.
And like other night fairies
I leave behind great riches
and sometimes by mistake,
little lipstick kisses.
Happy Valentine’s Day to everyone, and enjoy your passionate moments . . . please share your thoughts on The Incubus below.
